What counts as a business day?
A business day, or working day, is a day when businesses are normally open. In most countries that is Monday to Friday, not counting public holidays. In some countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Israel and others in the Middle East, the working week is Sunday to Thursday, so choose the days that match where you work.
Where business days matter
- Invoice due dates. Payment terms are usually counted in calendar days (Net 30 means 30 days), but some contracts say “within 10 business days”.
- Delivery and shipping times, which are usually quoted in business days.
- Notice periods and legal deadlines, such as time limits to respond to a claim. Check how the rules you follow count days.
- Bank transfers and refunds, which are processed on business days.
- Project plans, where you need to know how many working days you really have.
Public holidays included
United States: the 11 federal holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. When one falls on a Saturday it is observed on the Friday before, and on a Sunday it is observed on the Monday after. State holidays are not included; add them as other days off.
United Kingdom: the bank holidays for England and Wales or for Scotland, including substitute days when a holiday falls on a weekend, and the one-off holidays of 2020, 2022 and 2023. Northern Ireland's extra holidays are not included; add them as other days off.
Holidays are worked out from their rules, so the calculator works for any year. For very old or far future dates, check that no one-off holiday was announced.
Counting the start and end dates
By default the calculator counts from the day after the start date up to and including the end date. That answers “how many working days until this date?”. Tick “Count the start date” to include the first day as well, for example when you are counting the days someone worked.
Business days calculator FAQs
How many business days are in a year?
Usually 260 or 261 weekdays (Monday to Friday), less public holidays. With the 11 US federal holidays that is about 250 business days. In England and Wales, with 8 bank holidays, it is 252 or 253.
Is Saturday a business day?
In most countries no. Banks and offices usually count Monday to Friday as business days. If your business works on Saturdays, choose Monday to Saturday as your working week.
How do I add business days to a date?
Choose “Add or subtract days”, pick the start date and enter the number of business days. The calculator steps forward one day at a time, skipping weekends and holidays, and shows the date you land on.
Are public holidays counted as business days?
No. When you choose a holiday list, any holiday that falls on a working day is skipped and listed in the result.
Does the calculator include state or regional holidays?
It includes US federal holidays and UK bank holidays for England and Wales or for Scotland. For state, regional or company holidays, add each date under “Other days off”.
Is my data stored?
No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to BunnyDoc.
