How to fill in and sign Form CH2
Open the form and the notes
Use the button on this page to open CH2 from GOV.UK. The CH2 Notes explain each question; if you claim for more than two children, also fill in the additional child form CH2 (CS).
About you (questions 1 to 23)
Enter your National Insurance number, name, date of birth, address and nationality, and answer the questions about previous claims and time spent living or working abroad.
About your partner (questions 24 to 33)
If you live with a partner, give their details and employment status.
The children you are claiming for (questions 34 to 61)
Give each child's details and list any original documents you are sending, such as a birth certificate for a birth registered outside England, Wales or Scotland.
Higher income and payment details (questions 62 to 71)
Question 62 asks whether you want to be paid if either of you has income over £60,000. Then choose how often to be paid and give your bank or building society details.
Sign the declaration and post it
Tick the boxes that apply, sign and date the declaration and post the form with any original documents to Child Benefit Office (GB), Washington, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE88 1ZD.
What you need before you start
- Your National Insurance number and your partner's, if you have one.
- Each child's birth certificate or adoption certificate. HMRC only needs the original if the birth was registered in Northern Ireland or outside the UK, or the child was adopted abroad.
- Your bank or building society details.
- The CH2 notes.
The High Income Child Benefit Charge
If you or your partner has income over £60,000, the higher earner may have to pay some or all of the Child Benefit back through the High Income Child Benefit Charge. Above £80,000 the charge equals the benefit. You can still claim and choose not to be paid, which protects National Insurance credits that count towards your State Pension.
Common mistakes
- Sending photocopies of documents that HMRC needs as originals.
- Sending a birth certificate that is not needed, for a birth registered in England, Wales or Scotland.
- Waiting for all documents before claiming. Child Benefit can only be backdated up to 3 months.
- Not signing the declaration.
Form CH2: frequently asked questions
Where do I send the CH2 form?
Post it to Child Benefit Office (GB), Washington, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE88 1ZD, with the correct postage.
How far back can Child Benefit be paid?
The CH2 form says a claim can be backdated up to 3 months, so claim as soon as you can.
Do I need to send my child's birth certificate?
Only if the birth was registered in Northern Ireland or outside the UK. Births registered in England, Wales or Scotland do not need a certificate.
Should I claim if I earn over £60,000?
You can still claim and choose not to be paid. This can protect your State Pension record while avoiding the High Income Child Benefit Charge.
Can I claim Child Benefit online instead?
Yes. GOV.UK asks you to use the online service if you can and to use the CH2 only if you cannot claim online.
