How to fill in Nationales Visum

  1. Check whether to apply online

Many German missions accept national visa applications through the Consular Services Portal for 28 purposes, including work, study and family reunification. If your mission does not yet offer this, use the paper form.

  2. Personal and family details (fields 1 to 4)

Enter your personal and passport details, then details of your spouse or registered partner, your children and your parents.

  3. Previous stays and addresses (fields 5 to 8)

List your last five stays in Germany, your intended address there, your permanent address outside Germany and any family members travelling with you.

  4. Purpose, references and finances (fields 9 to 13)

Tick the purpose of your stay, give references in Germany, your occupation and intended length of stay, and how you will support yourself and cover health insurance.

  5. Background questions (fields 14 to 16)

Answer the questions on criminal convictions, previous expulsions or refusals, and the listed diseases truthfully.

  6. Print, sign and bring it to your appointment

Print the form and sign the declaration and the § 54 notice with place and date. Bring it with photos (loose, not glued), your passport, the supporting documents and the fee to your appointment at the mission or visa centre.

What you need before you start

  • A valid passport.
  • Biometric passport photos.
  • Documents for your purpose, such as a work contract, university admission or marriage certificate.
  • Proof of means of subsistence and health insurance.
  • An appointment with your German mission or its visa centre.

Your mission's website lists the exact documents for each visa type.

Online or paper?

The Federal Foreign Office says long-term visas for 28 purposes can be applied for online through the Consular Services Portal. If your mission does not yet offer that, you book an appointment and apply on paper. In both cases you still attend an appointment in person, where your fingerprints and photo are taken, the fee is paid and original documents are checked.

Common mistakes

  • Gluing the photo to the form instead of enclosing it.
  • Signing only one of the two signature fields.
  • Applying at a mission that is not responsible for your place of residence.
  • Leaving gaps in the list of previous stays.
