Form No. 121 is the declaration you give a bank, company or other payer so that it does not deduct TDS (tax deducted at source) from income such as interest or dividends, when the tax on your total income for the year will be nil. Under the Income-tax Rules, 2026 it replaces the old Forms 15G and 15H. How to fill in and sign Form 121 (ex-15G/15H)

  1. Check that you qualify

If you are under 60, the tax on your estimated total income must be nil and the income covered by your declarations must not exceed the maximum amount not chargeable to tax. If you are 60 or over at any time in the tax year, the tax on your estimated total income must be nil.

  2. Your details (Part A, items 1 to 8)

Enter your name, address, PAN, status, residential status, whether you are 60 or over, email, contact number and the tax year the declaration is for. A valid, operative PAN is required.

  3. Income details (items 9 to 13)

Give the nature of the income and the estimated amount for this declaration, the number and total of any other Form 121 declarations you have given this year, the combined total, and your estimated total income for the year.

  4. Previous returns (item 14)

List the income tax returns you filed for the previous two tax years, with acknowledgement numbers and returned income.

  5. Sign the declaration

Read the declaration, then add the place, date, your signature and name at the end of Part A. A false declaration can lead to prosecution or penalty.

  6. Give it to every payer

Give Part A to each payer of the income, such as each bank, ideally at the start of the tax year and before the income is credited. Many payers let you submit it electronically on their own system. The payer completes Part B and gives the declaration a Unique Identification Number.

What you need before you start

  • Your PAN, which must be valid and operative.
  • Proof of age, if you are claiming to be 60 or over.
  • The payer's details and the account, deposit or investment the income comes from.
  • An estimate of your total income for the tax year.
  • Acknowledgement numbers of your returns for the previous two tax years, if you filed them.

Form 121 replaces Forms 15G and 15H

The Income Tax Department's Form 121 FAQs say Form No. 121 merges Form 15G, used by people under 60 and other persons, and Form 15H, used by senior citizens, into one declaration. Senior citizens tick the age question and need only show that the tax on their estimated total income is nil.

Can I submit Form 121 electronically?

Yes. The department says digital verification on the payer's portal is the preferred method and paper is also allowed. From 1 April 2027, you will also be able to give the declaration to a depository for certain securities, units and dividends held with it. If your payer accepts a signed PDF, you can sign it with the free Sign PDF tool.

Common mistakes

  • Filing when the tax on your total income will not be nil.
  • Giving the declaration to only one bank when you have income from several payers.
  • Leaving out earlier Form 121 declarations from the same year in item 11.
  • Missing or inoperative PAN.

Form 121 (ex-15G/15H): frequently asked questions

Yes. Under the Income-tax Rules, 2026, Form No. 121 replaces Forms 15G and 15H with a single declaration.

Who can submit Form 121?

Resident individuals, HUFs, trusts and other persons, but not companies or firms, whose tax on estimated total income is nil. If you are under 60, your declared income must also be within the maximum amount not chargeable to tax.

To each payer of the income, such as your bank, not to the Income Tax Department. You do not upload it on the income tax portal yourself; the payer reports it.

When should I submit Form 121?

At the start of the tax year and before the income is credited or paid, so that no TDS is deducted.

Can I submit Form 121 online?
