How to fill in Forms 93–96 (ex-49A/49AA)

  1. Pick the right form

Form 93 is for individuals who are citizens of India, Form 94 for companies and other entities formed in India (including firms, LLPs, trusts and HUFs), Form 95 for individuals who are not Indian citizens and Form 96 for entities formed outside India. Companies, LLPs and FPIs can instead apply through the MCA or SEBI common application form.

  2. Personal details (Form 93, Part A)

Enter your name in full without initials, gender, date of birth, Aadhaar number, addresses, residential status and contact details. Aadhaar is mandatory unless you are in an exempt category.

  3. Income, parents and Assessing Officer (Parts B to D)

Tick your sources of income, give your parents' names and choose which to print on the card, and enter the Assessing Officer code, which the PAN service providers help you find.

  4. Representative and address for letters (Parts E and F)

If a representative assessee applies for you, for example for a minor, give their details. Choose the address for communication.

  5. Proofs and declaration (Part G)

List the documents you are attaching as proof of identity, address and date of birth, then print the form, paste two recent colour photographs (4.5 cm by 3.5 cm) and sign or put your left thumb impression across the first photo and in the declaration box.

  6. Submit through Protean or UTIITSL

Apply online on the Protean or UTIITSL portal, or hand in the paper form with your documents at a PAN centre of either provider. Keep your acknowledgement number to track the application.

What you need before you start

  • Proof of identity, such as Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or voter ID.
  • Proof of address; utility bills and bank or depository statements must be no more than three months old.
  • Proof of date of birth; for people born on or after 1 October 2023 this is a birth certificate.
  • Two recent colour photographs, 4.5 cm by 3.5 cm, for a paper application.
  • For Form 95: a passport, OCI or PIO card, or a foreign ID or TIN attested by apostille or an Indian mission, plus your taxpayer identification number abroad.

Fees

The Income Tax Department's PAN FAQs list these fees, including taxes: ₹107 for a physical PAN card sent within India, ₹1,017 for one sent outside India, ₹72 at a PAN centre or TIN facilitation centre, and ₹66 for a paperless online application using e-KYC and e-Sign or a digital signature certificate. An e-PAN is available if you do not need a physical card.

Paper or paperless?

The paper form must be printed, with photographs pasted on and your signature or thumb impression across the first photo, so type your details in and then sign by hand. The paperless route on the Protean or UTIITSL portal uses Aadhaar e-KYC and e-Sign instead, and is the cheapest option.

Common mistakes

  • Using initials instead of your full name; if Aadhaar shows initials, give the expanded name with proof.
  • Applying when you already have a PAN; the declaration confirms you do not.
  • Address proofs that are more than three months old.
  • Using Form 93 when you are not an Indian citizen; use Form 95.
