You sign and date Section A. The ATO does not say whether an electronic signature is accepted on the PDF; the form can also be completed through ATO online services in myGov.
The Withholding declaration (NAT 3093) tells your employer or other payer about a change that affects the tax they withhold from your pay, for example if you stop claiming the tax-free threshold or repay a HELP debt. You give it to your payer, not the ATO. Download the form from ato.gov.au, open it in BunnyDoc's free Sign PDF tool, type into its fillable fields, add your signature and date, and download it. Everything happens in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

Sign Section A and give it to your payer
Sign and date Section A and give the form to your payer. Your payer completes Section B and keeps the form. Do not send it to the ATO.
What you need before you start
- Your tax file number.
- Your residency status for tax purposes.
- Whether you claim the tax-free threshold from another payer.
- Details of any study or training loan debt and any tax offset you want to claim through withholding.
- The current form from ato.gov.au.
Withholding declaration or TFN declaration?
You give a TFN declaration when you start with a new payer. You use a withholding declaration later, to tell that payer about a change, such as repaying a HELP debt or claiming the tax-free threshold from a different job. To ask for less tax to be withheld for other reasons, the ATO points to a separate PAYG withholding variation application, which goes to the ATO.
Common mistakes
- Claiming the tax-free threshold from more than one payer at the same time.
- Sending the form to the ATO instead of your payer.
- Forgetting to tell your payer when a study loan is fully repaid.
- Leaving Section A unsigned.
