Form T2200, Declaration of Conditions of Employment, is completed and signed by an employer to confirm that an employee had to pay certain expenses as a condition of their job. The employee keeps it and uses it to claim employment expenses on Form T777. How to fill in and sign Form T2200

  1. Use the form for the right tax year

Open the T2200 for the year the expenses were paid. The current form on canada.ca is the 2025 edition, used for 2025 returns filed in 2026; earlier years have their own editions.

  2. Employee and employer details

Enter the employee's name and the employer's details, and the tax year the form covers.

  3. Conditions of employment

The employer answers the questions about the employee's conditions of employment, including which expenses the employee had to pay under their contract and whether any allowance or repayment was given.

  4. Tradespersons and apprentice mechanics

If the employee claims tools as a tradesperson or apprentice mechanic, the employer also answers the relevant question in Part C (question 12 for tradespersons, question 13 for apprentice mechanics).

  5. Employer signs the certification

An authorised person for the employer signs and dates the certification. The CRA accepts an electronic signature.

  6. Give it to the employee to keep

The employee does not send the T2200 with their return. They keep it in case the CRA asks to see it, and claim the expenses on Form T777.

What you need before you start

  • The employee's job conditions for the year: where they worked, what they had to pay for and any allowances or repayments.
  • Details of any tools a tradesperson or apprentice mechanic had to provide.
  • The T2200 for the right year from canada.ca.

Can a T2200 be signed electronically?

Yes. The CRA's employment expenses guide, T4044, says the CRA will accept an electronic signature on Form T2200 and that employers are not required to provide a handwritten signature. For background, see whether e-signatures are legal.

Common mistakes

  • Using the form for the wrong tax year.
  • The employee filling in and signing it instead of the employer.
  • Sending the T2200 to the CRA with the return instead of keeping it.
  • One form for several employers; each employer completes a separate T2200.

Who fills in the T2200?

The employer. If you had more than one employer, each one completes a separate form.

No. Keep it in case the CRA asks to see it. You claim the expenses on Form T777, which you include with your return.

Can my employer sign the T2200 electronically?

Yes. The CRA accepts an electronic signature on the T2200, and employers do not need to sign by hand.

Which year's T2200 should I use?
