How to fill in Form 1040-X
Check whether to amend
Amend to change income, deductions, credits or filing status. The IRS generally corrects simple maths errors itself. File within 3 years of the original return or 2 years of paying the tax, whichever is later, to claim a refund.
Open the form and enter the year
Open f1040x.pdf from irs.gov in Sign PDF and enter the tax year you are amending at the top. Use a separate 1040-X for each year.
Fill in Part I columns A to C
Column A shows the original or last adjusted amounts, column B the increase or decrease, and column C the corrected amounts. Show decreases in brackets.
Explain the changes in Part II
Say briefly why you are amending, for example a corrected W-2 or a missed credit, and attach any schedules or forms that changed.
Print and sign by hand
Print the form and sign it in ink. Both spouses sign an amended joint return. A paid preparer also signs and adds their PTIN.
Mail it, or e-file instead
Mail it to the address in the instructions for your state and situation. If your software supports it, e-file the amended return and sign with a PIN.
What you need before you start
- A copy of the return you are amending.
- The documents behind the change, such as a corrected W-2 or 1099.
- Any schedules or forms that change because of the amendment.
- The Form 1040-X instructions.
Can I sign Form 1040-X electronically?
Only if you e-file it. The IRS instructions say a paper Form 1040-X must have a handwritten signature and that digital or typed signatures are not valid. When you e-file with software, you sign with a five-digit Self-Select PIN or a Practitioner PIN.
So if you use BunnyDoc for a paper 1040-X, type your figures in, print the form and sign it with a pen.
Common mistakes
- Typing or pasting a signature on a paper 1040-X.
- Amending more than one year on the same form.
