How to fill in Form 1099-NEC

  1. Check you need to file

For payments made in tax years beginning after 2025 the general reporting threshold is $2,000 under the IRS instructions, up from $600. Check the current instructions for the year you are reporting.

  2. Open the current form

Use the button on this page to open f1099nec.pdf from irs.gov in Sign PDF. It contains Copy A, Copy 1, Copy B and Copy 2.

  3. Payer and recipient details

Enter your name, address and TIN as the payer, then the recipient's name, address and TIN from the Form W-9 they gave you.

  4. Fill in the boxes

Box 1a is nonemployee compensation. Other boxes cover cash tips, overtime, the direct sales check box, golden parachute payments, federal tax withheld and state information.

  5. Give Copy B to the recipient

Download the completed copy and give Copy B to the contractor by 31 January, on paper or electronically if they have agreed.

  6. File Copy A with the IRS

File by 31 January. Do not print Copy A from this PDF: e-file through the IRS Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) or order official scannable forms. E-filing is required if you file 10 or more information returns in total.

What you need before you start

  • The recipient's legal name, address and TIN, usually from their Form W-9.
  • Your own name, address and EIN or SSN.
  • The total paid during the year and any federal or state tax withheld.
  • The instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC.

Why you cannot file Copy A from the PDF

The IRS says Copy A on irs.gov is for information only. It is printed in a special red ink that its scanners read, and filing a printed copy can lead to a penalty. File Copy A electronically, for example through the free IRIS portal, or order official scannable forms from IRS.gov/EmployerForms. Copy B, Copy 1 and Copy 2 can be printed from the PDF.

Common mistakes

  • Filing a printed Copy A downloaded from irs.gov.
  • Using Form 1099-MISC for contractor fees that belong on 1099-NEC.
  • Missing the 31 January deadline, which applies to both the recipient copy and the IRS copy.
  • A recipient name and TIN that do not match.
