Form 8822 tells the IRS that your home mailing address has changed, so notices and refunds reach you. Business addresses use Form 8822-B instead. Open the official form from irs.gov in BunnyDoc's free Sign PDF tool straight from this page, type into its fillable fields, add your signature and date, and download it. Everything runs in your browser, so the PDF never leaves your device.

How to fill in and sign Form 8822

  1. Open the current form

Use the button on this page to open f8822.pdf from irs.gov in Sign PDF.

  2. Choose what the change covers (lines 1 and 2)

Tick line 1 for individual income tax returns such as Form 1040. Tick line 2 for gift, estate or generation-skipping transfer tax returns. Also tick the line 1 box if your last return was joint and you now live apart from that spouse.

  3. Your names and numbers (lines 3a to 5b)

Enter your name and SSN, your spouse's name and SSN if you filed jointly, and any earlier names used on returns.

  4. Old and new addresses (lines 6a to 7)

Give your old address on line 6a, your spouse's old address on line 6b if different, and your new address on line 7. Foreign addresses have their own fields.

  5. Sign and date Part II

Sign and date the form. Your spouse signs too if the last return was joint, unless you ticked the separate-residence box. A representative attaches a power of attorney such as Form 2848.

  6. Mail it to the right IRS address

Send the form by itself, not with your tax return, to the IRS address that matches your old address in the table on page 2 of the form.

What you need before you start

  • Your name and SSN, and your spouse's if you last filed jointly.
  • Your old and new addresses.
  • Any earlier names shown on past returns.

Common mistakes

  • Using Form 8822 for a business address. That needs Form 8822-B.
  • Leaving out the spouse's signature after a joint return.
  • Attaching the form to your tax return instead of mailing it separately.
  • Sending it to the address for your new state; the table goes by your old address.

Other ways to update your address

The IRS also updates your address when you file a return showing the new one. Form 8822 is the way to tell them in between returns. The form says processing generally takes 4 to 6 weeks.
