The file is handled in your browser and never leaves your device.

How to fill in Form I-765

  1. Check the edition and open the form

USCIS published a new I-765 edition in 2026 and rejects older editions, so check the USCIS I-765 page first. Then open i-765.pdf from uscis.gov in Sign PDF.

  2. Reason for applying

Tick whether this is your first permission to work, a replacement of a lost or damaged card, or a renewal.

  3. Information about you

Give your names, addresses, A-number and USCIS online account number if you have them, SSN details, and your arrival and immigration status.

  4. Your eligibility category

Enter the eligibility category code that matches your situation, such as (c)(9) for a pending adjustment application. The instructions list every category and the evidence each needs.

  5. Print and sign by hand

Download the completed form, print it and sign the applicant's signature section in ink. A typed or pasted signature on a paper form is not valid.

  6. File with USCIS

File online if your category allows it, or mail the signed form with the fee, photos and evidence to the address for your category on the USCIS I-765 page.

What you need before you start

  • Your eligibility category code from the I-765 instructions.
  • Copies of your current immigration documents, such as your I-94 and any previous EAD.
  • Two passport-style photos if you file by mail.
  • The current fee for your category from the USCIS fee schedule, as some categories pay no fee.

Can I sign Form I-765 electronically?

No, not on a paper filing. A USCIS rule on signatures on immigration benefit requests, in force for filings made on or after 10 July 2026, says a valid signature on a paper form is a handwritten one. Typed names, copied signature images, stamps and signatures created with e-signature software are invalid, and USCIS can reject or even deny a request because of them, keeping the fee in the case of a denial. A scan, photocopy or fax of a form that carries an original wet-ink signature is accepted.

So type your answers into Form I-765 with BunnyDoc, download it, print it, and sign it by hand in ink. If you file online through a USCIS online account instead, you sign electronically inside that system. For background, see whether e-signatures are legal.

Common mistakes

  • Filing an old edition after USCIS switched to the new one.
  • Entering the wrong eligibility category code.
  • Paying a fee that is wrong for your category.
  • Sending the form to the wrong address for your category.
  • A typed or e-signature on the paper form.
