Form I-864 is the affidavit of support in which a sponsor promises to financially support an immigrant, as most family-based immigrants must show they will not become a public charge. The promise is a legally enforceable contract. The file is handled in your browser and never leaves your device.
How to fill in Form I-864
Check the edition and open the form
Confirm the accepted edition on the USCIS I-864 page, then open i-864.pdf from uscis.gov in Sign PDF. Some sponsors can use the shorter Form I-864EZ instead.
Basis for filing
Say why you are the sponsor, for example as the petitioner who filed the I-130, a joint sponsor, or a substitute sponsor.
The immigrants you are sponsoring
Give the details of the principal immigrant and any family members immigrating with them who are covered by this affidavit.
Your details and household size
Enter your own information, then count your household: yourself, your dependants, the immigrants you are sponsoring and anyone else you have sponsored and are still responsible for.
Your income and assets
Report your current income and the income shown on your tax return, and add household members' income with Form I-864A or assets if you need them to reach the required level.
Print, sign and hand it over
Print the completed form, sign the sponsor's contract section in ink, and give it to the immigrant to file with their Form I-485 to USCIS, or submit it through the National Visa Center if the case is processed abroad.
What you need before you start
- Your most recent federal tax return or IRS transcript.
- Proof of current income, such as pay slips or an employer letter.
- Your household size and the current poverty guidelines (Form I-864P).
- Form I-864A for any household member whose income you are counting.
Can I sign Form I-864 electronically?
No, not on a paper filing. A USCIS rule on signatures on immigration benefit requests, in force for filings made on or after 10 July 2026, says a valid signature on a paper form is a handwritten one. Typed names, copied signature images, stamps and signatures created with e-signature software are invalid, and USCIS can reject or even deny a request because of them, keeping the fee in the case of a denial. A scan, photocopy or fax of a form that carries an original wet-ink signature is accepted.
So type your answers into Form I-864 with BunnyDoc, download it, print it, and sign it by hand in ink. If you file online through a USCIS online account instead, you sign electronically inside that system. For background, see whether e-signatures are legal.
Common mistakes
- Counting household size wrongly, which changes the income you need.
- Forgetting a joint sponsor when your income is too low.
- Leaving out the tax return or transcript.
- A digital signature on the paper form.

Not on a paper filing. USCIS requires a handwritten signature, though a scan of a wet-ink signature is accepted.

Usually until the immigrant becomes a US citizen, has worked or can be credited with 40 quarters of work, leaves the US permanently or dies.
What if I do not earn enough?
You can add the income of household members with Form I-864A, use your assets, or find a joint sponsor who files their own I-864.
