How to fill in Form N-400

  1. Check eligibility and the edition

Use the USCIS N-400 page to check the accepted edition and the eligibility rules, such as the usual 5 years as a permanent resident, or 3 years if married to a US citizen. Then open n-400.pdf in Sign PDF.

  2. Eligibility and information about you

Tick the basis of your eligibility, then give your names, A-number, green card date, and biographic details.

  3. Addresses, marital history, children and travel

List your addresses and employment or schooling for the period the form asks for, your marital history, your children, and every trip outside the US of more than 24 hours.

  4. Answer the eligibility questions

Answer every yes or no question about things such as taxes, arrests, and support for the Constitution. Explain any yes answer as the form directs.

  5. Print and sign by hand

Download the form, print it and sign the applicant's signature section in ink. You will also sign again at your interview.

  6. File with USCIS

File online through a USCIS account, or mail the signed form, fee and copies of your green card to the address on the USCIS N-400 page.

What you need before you start

  • Your green card and A-number.
  • Your address, employment and travel history for the period the form asks about.
  • Marriage, divorce and children's details.
  • Records of any arrests or court cases.
  • The current fee from the USCIS fee schedule, and details of any reduced fee you qualify for.

Can I sign Form N-400 electronically?

No, not on a paper filing. A USCIS rule on signatures on immigration benefit requests, in force for filings made on or after 10 July 2026, says a valid signature on a paper form is a handwritten one. Typed names, copied signature images, stamps and signatures created with e-signature software are invalid, and USCIS can reject or even deny a request because of them, keeping the fee in the case of a denial. A scan, photocopy or fax of a form that carries an original wet-ink signature is accepted.

So type your answers into Form N-400 with BunnyDoc, download it, print it, and sign it by hand in ink. If you file online through a USCIS online account instead, you sign electronically inside that system. For background, see whether e-signatures are legal.

Common mistakes

  • Filing too early. USCIS allows filing up to 90 days before you meet the continuous residence requirement, not earlier.
  • Missing trips abroad from the travel list.
  • Not disclosing an arrest or citation, even one that was dismissed.
  • Leaving out copies of both sides of the green card.
