Instructions
Official HMRC page

Form P87 is how an employee claims Income Tax relief by post for work expenses their employer has not paid back, such as professional subscriptions, uniforms, tools or business mileage. Open the official form from GOV.UK in BunnyDoc's free Sign PDF tool straight from this page, type into its fillable fields, add your signature and date, and download it to print and post. Everything happens in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

How to fill in and sign Form P87

  1. Check you can claim by post

Your expenses must be for items you need only for your job, the total for each tax year must be £2,500 or less, and the claim must be within 4 years of the end of the tax year. Above £2,500 you need a Self Assessment tax return instead.

  2. Enter your personal details

Give your name, address, phone number, date of birth and National Insurance number.

  3. Add your employment details for each tax year

For each job and tax year you are claiming for, enter the employer's name and address, the employer's PAYE reference, your job title and your employee number.

  4. Fill in the expense sections that apply

Complete the sections for flat rate expenses, professional fees and subscriptions, mileage, hotels and meals, or other expenses. For each one, enter what you spent and any amount your employer paid back.

  5. Choose how to be repaid and sign the declaration

Say whether the refund should go to you or a nominee, then sign and date the declaration.

  6. Post the form and evidence to HMRC

Print the form and send it with any evidence GOV.UK asks for, such as receipts or mileage logs, to the HMRC address printed on the form. HMRC rejects postal claims that are not on form P87.

What you need before you start

  • Your National Insurance number.
  • Each employer's name, address and PAYE reference (on your payslip or P60).
  • The amounts you spent and any amounts your employer paid back.
  • Evidence such as receipts, mileage logs with start and end postcodes, or proof of professional fees. See the list on GOV.UK.

Working from home claims

GOV.UK says you cannot claim tax relief for working from home for the tax year 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027. You can still claim for the 4 previous tax years if you meet the rules, with evidence that you had to work from home, such as your employment contract.

Common mistakes

  • Claiming for costs your employer has already reimbursed in full.
  • Claiming more than £2,500 in a tax year on a P87 instead of a tax return.
  • Leaving out the employer's PAYE reference.
  • Sending a letter instead of the P87 form.
  • Forgetting to sign and date the declaration.

Form P87: frequently asked questions

How far back can I claim on a P87?

Up to 4 years from the end of the tax year you are claiming for. You can include several tax years and several jobs on one form.

Is there a limit for P87 claims?

Yes. You can use the P87 only if your total expenses claim is £2,500 or less for each tax year. Above that you need to complete a Self Assessment tax return.

Can I claim for working from home?

Not for the 2026 to 2027 tax year, according to GOV.UK. You can still claim for the 4 previous tax years if you were required to work from home.

Where do I send form P87?

Post it with any evidence to the HMRC address printed on the form.

Can I sign the P87 electronically?

GOV.UK does not say. The form must be signed and dated, then printed and posted, so a handwritten signature on the printout is the safest option.
