Instructions
Official HMRC page

The R40 is HMRC's claim for repayment of Income Tax deducted from savings and investments, used by people who are not in Self Assessment. Since September 2024 HMRC has replaced the PDF with interactive online guidance, so start from the official GOV.UK page; if you are given the print and post form, you can open it in BunnyDoc's free Sign PDF tool, add your signature and date, and download it. Everything happens in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

How to fill in and sign Form R40

  1. Check you can use the R40

GOV.UK says to use it if your gross savings and investment income is £10,000 or less, gross property income is £10,000 or less and net property income is £2,500 or less. Do not use it if you are registered for Self Assessment or live outside the UK.

  2. Gather your figures for the tax year

Collect interest statements, dividend vouchers and pension or income details. You need a separate claim for each tax year.

  3. Start the claim online

Use the Start now link on the GOV.UK R40 page. You cannot use the online route when claiming for someone else.

  4. Claiming for someone else: complete the postal form

Start the claim online and you will get a link to the postal form. Fill it in with their details and sign your own name in the declaration.

  5. Send evidence only when asked

If you are claiming back tax deducted from interest, such as interest on a compensation payment, post the document from the payer showing gross interest, tax deducted and net interest to Pay As You Earn, HM Revenue and Customs, BX9 1AS. For other claims, do not send evidence.

What you need before you start

  • Your National Insurance number.
  • Gross and net amounts of savings interest and investment income for the tax year.
  • Details of pensions, employment and other income for the same year.
  • Bank details for the repayment.
